Get The Look: Pink Nude Matte Lips for WOC

What is the biggest beauty struggle for WOC? Finding products that match our varied skintones! One of the largest issues for me personally is finding ‘nude’ lipsticks that match my definition of ‘nude’. Nude for me is quite a bit deeper, and more pink, than the typical cool, sand shade you see over and over again from all the major brands. But after trying countless lippies, I’ve compiled a list of lipsticks from my own collection that I grab when I want to go completely in the nude!

My friend Whitney texted me on Thursday asking me about nude lipsticks, specifically wanting to find something that would look complementary to her skintone (which is a little darker than mine). She told me that she had seen a fairer friend wearing Candy K from Kylie Cosmetics and wanting something that would flatter her skin like pale pink color looked on the other girl.
So I got to thinking about what ‘nude’ means to beauty lovers of color. We have a much different idea in our minds, way different than Candy K and there are only a few companies that cater towards the struggle! I decided, in answer to Bama’s question (I call Whitney, ‘Bama’ because she’s from Alabama … it’s a southern thing!), that I would come up with a couple of options for a go-to ‘WOC nude’. Keep reading below to see what I came up with!

Coloured Raine Matte Lip Paint ‘Mars’
I’m a big fan of the Coloured Raine Matte Lip Paint formula, it’s highly pigmented and one coat is enough for full coverage for my lips. It’s a tad bit drying, but it doesn’t budge once dried down! Coloured Raine, $17

ColourPop Cosmetics Ultra Matte Lip ‘StingRaye’
If you are a fan of ‘ItsMyRayeRaye’ on YouTube/Instagram, this is her baby! She collabed with ColourPop to bring us a small collection of ‘nudes’ that flatter a lot of skintones. This liquid lipstick in particular is my favorite from that collection. ColourPop, $6

GiveMeGlow Cosmetics Matte Liquid Lipstick ‘Jane Smith’
GiveMeGlow is one of my favorite indie brands and I’ve watched the company grow from lip creams to lip laquers to matte liquid lipstick over the past year! This shade is my favorite from the brand and I wore it every day for nearly a month to work last summer. Unfortunately, this shade is discontinued, but you can find a similar color in the shade ‘She’s All That’. GiveMeGlow, $13.25

ColourPop Cosmetics Ultra Matte Lip ‘Teeny Tiny’
Also from ColourPop (quite a few on this list are), is ‘Teeny Tiny’ which is a tad bit darker, and more greige, than ‘StingRaye’. It’s a little bolder, a little sexier, and the perfect nude for a night out. ColourPop, $6
ColourPop Cosmetics Ultra Matte Lip ‘Tulle’
Another ColourPop favorite from their original launch of about 20 shades last summer! ‘Tulle’ was one of my first nude loves and I’m nearly finished with the tube. That should tell you something! This shade is a little more pink than brown, but it matches my lip color almost perfectly when paired with MAC Lip Pencil in ‘Chestnut’. ColourPop, $6

Glitter Elixirs Liquid Lipstick ‘It Puts Lipstick In The Basket’
If I had to pick one favorite from this list, it would be ‘It Puts Lipstick In The Basket’! This is the only shade that is actually darker than my natural color while still being nude and not completely brown. Kudos to Kennedy at Glitter Elixirs for creating a shade that can work on my complexion or someone darker than me! Etsy

BONUS SHADES!

ColourPop Cosmetics Ultra Matte Lip ‘Kae’
Definitely not a pink-y nude, but this shade would look gorgeous on someone with a warmer complexion than me. It’s more orange/brown and it is part of the ‘KaePop’ collaboration between LA socialite/model Karrueche and ColourPop. ColourPop, $6

NYX Cosmetics Soft Matte Lip Cream ‘Dubai’
This didn’t make the top picks because it doesn’t dry all the matte and it definitely doesn’t stay in place all day, BUT that doesn’t mean its not a fabulous color! This is a true nude for me – not all the way pink, not all the way brown. I especially play around with this in the warmer months as I can put it on with just about any crazy eye look I come up during the summer. Ulta, $6
