When MAC announced the return of one of its most popular formulas, people went wild. Now as the extra dimension skinfinishes have begun a gradual re-release (slowly with Oh Darling! in 2015 and now a slew of shades in 2017), everyone is in a frenzy to get their hands on them once again. I purchased two shades, Superb (repromote) and Glow With It (new), to try out for myself. My thought? Read on below!
Ask any makeup aficionado what their most treasured (or if they don’t have it, lusted after) product is and I guarantee they will say MAC Extra Dimension Skinfinsh (EDSF) in ‘Whisper of Gilt’. The mega popular highlighter first appeared on the scene a few years ago in a metallic formula. Everyone went wild for the limited edition shade. And then poof – it was retired! And just like that, highlighters were forever changed.
I initially fell in love with the EDSF formula because of its metallic texture and was thrilled to be able to try out Superb (which I missed during the first release) and a brand new shade Glow With It. I think I was most intrigued with this new shade. How was MAC going to take bronze gold and make it metallic while still maintaining the integrity of the shade?
After initial swatches and literally drowning my cheekbones with Glow With It, I don’t feel that MAC was able to successful translate the shade into the EDSF formula.
Believe me, I wanted this review to just be outstanding praise for both these shades, but Glow With It falls flat – especially when you look at it in context of the $33 price tag. It doesn’t have the metallic sheen previous EDSF favorites Oh Darling! and Shaft of Gold have. Even Shaft of Gold (Holiday 2015) has a more metallic finish and that was the least metallic product from that collection. Moving to the other shade in my order, Superb. It lives up to its name and delivers a great metallic finish – like it is supposed to. I don’t have the original release to compare it to, but it has a gorgeous pink silver tint to it that seems very similar to the shade in the OG EDSF. I really enjoyed the way this applied via swatch and I’m hopeful that it will perform on my cheeks!
