I’m a huge fan of highlighters and the more golden goddess-y / bling all in your face / see me from Mars, the better! Usually reserved for indie or luxury beauty brands, it’s rare to see a quality highlighter from a drugstore brand, save for NYX Cosmetics or Makeup Revolution (which you still can’t usually find at your corner drugstore). So when Maybelline dropped their first Master Chrome Metallic Highlighter, you know I had to have it.
I ordered their first shade ‘Molten Gold’ via Amazon and it got to me in two days. With an already low retail price of $8 and my free prime shipping, I’d say that was a pretty darn good deal. I wasn’t really sure what to expect with the formula since this product is brand new to the Maybelline line. When I first swatched it, I wasn’t blown away by the powdery feel. It reminded me of how the Ofra ‘You Dew You’ and ‘You Glow Girl’ highlighters are, but the product didn’t glide on as smoothly when I took my finger to my arm for a swatch. Aside from that fact, it blended beautifully and definitely lived up to the ‘Master Chrome’ name!
The finish is incredibly metallic. That’s exactly how I like it, but I know not everyone appreciates a galactic glow. There are fine pieces of glitter in the product that do an excellent job of reflecting in natural and artificial light. They aren’t overbearing in my opinion, but if you don’t like glitter in your highlighter you probably won’t like this product.
Another tid bit I really like about this product is the color itself. It’s a warm, semi-bronze gold that is VERY flattering on brown skin. I never really know what to expect with Maybelline since their foundation / concealer shade range isn’t that brown girl friendly. But it’s clear that they had medium and brown skin beauties in mind during product planning. In the future, I hope they will release some other shades complementary across the shade spectrum, but this baby will more than tide you over till then.
If you are wondering how this product compares shade wise to other highlighters in my collection, check out the comparison swatch below. Did I miss a product comparison? Let me know in the comments!
