This past weekend, I had the opportunity to attend a plus size fashion blogger conference in Atlanta. I spent four hours hopping from booth to booth chatting up vendors and looking at cute clothes! Also in attendance was beauty brand Magnolia Makeup. Magnolia Makeup specializes in makeup for women of color so I swarmed their booth like an angry bee! Want to know what I picked up? Keep reading!
I grabbed some cool tones blues and greens and a gorgeous purple-ish burgundy. The shade names were Sakura (green shimmer), Speak Easy (burgundy), Skywalker (royal blue), Tchoupitoulas (deep teal). These colors are very fall appropriate and I was thinking about that when I grabbed them. I’ve got several pigments from Maybelline, MAC, Ultimo Cosmetics, etc. in my collection, but NONE of them perform like the ones from Magnolia Makeup.
I have never seen such smooth and full coverage in one swipe. Especially from the matte shades. They were jam packed with color and swatched great without primer. With primer, the color was unmatched among my collection. I did my swatches without primer just so you could see them in their natural state.
I only purchased one glitter because I thought the price was kind of steep! It was $12 (on sale) for 3g of product. There wasn’t a label on the packaging, but it’s the black and gold combo glitter. I can get the same amount for less about $5 from Glitter Elixirs Cosmetics. I was thinking about this price difference while I was looking, but I thought maybe this was some type of magical glitter so I picked up one just to test.
It wasn’t magical glitter! HA! My advice, Glitter Elixirs Cosmetics is still my favorite glitter for the price and quality. Just stick with them!
The two liquid lipsticks I purchased were suggestions from one of the makeup artists at the booth and they are gorgeous! I got ‘Bam!’ and ‘Hot Girl’. These are metallic shades like the old Kat Von D colors (she is bringing them back this winter). In fact, Kat Von D ‘Adora’ is a near match to ‘Hot Girl’ from Magnolia. I’ve got a side-by-side comparison below if you are interested. ‘Adora’ is now discontinued, but I found mine at TJMaxx a few months ago so they might still be floating around there.
The lipsticks were $15 each which puts them in the price range of Dose of Colors and Jeffree Star so I will compare them to these mid-level indie brands. The formula was definitely more liquid than cream. I like liquid formulas because they tend to dry down faster and stay longer. The Magnolia formula was no different. I was pleased with the staying power, but don’t expect it to be completely touchproof. There was a little transfer when something touches your lips.
Overall, I’m happy I got a chance to check out Magnolia Makeup this weekend and I know I am going to have SO much fun with these pigments! The glitter was a skip, but now you know! And definitely check out the metallic liquid lipsticks if you are having Kat Von D withdrawal.
