Review: Magnolia Makeup Pigments + Glitter

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to attend a plus size fashion blogger conference in Atlanta. I spent four hours hopping from booth to booth chatting up vendors and looking at cute clothes! Also in attendance was beauty brand Magnolia Makeup. Magnolia Makeup specializes in makeup for women of color so I swarmed their booth like an angry bee! Want to know what I picked up? Keep reading!

I got a litttttle bit carried away at the booth with all the makeup right in front of me just waiting for me to put it in my shopping bag! I got four pigments, one glitter, and two liquid lipsticks. Let’s start with the pigments!

I grabbed some cool tones blues and greens and a gorgeous purple-ish burgundy. The shade names were Sakura (green shimmer), Speak Easy (burgundy), Skywalker (royal blue), Tchoupitoulas (deep teal). These colors are very fall appropriate and I was thinking about that when I grabbed them. I’ve got several pigments from Maybelline, MAC, Ultimo Cosmetics, etc. in my collection, but NONE of them perform like the ones from Magnolia Makeup.

I have never seen such smooth and full coverage in one swipe. Especially from the matte shades. They were jam packed with color and swatched great without primer. With primer, the color was unmatched among my collection. I did my swatches without primer just so you could see them in their natural state.

I only purchased one glitter because I thought the price was kind of steep! It was $12 (on sale) for 3g of product. There wasn’t a label on the packaging, but it’s the black and gold combo glitter. I can get the same amount for less about $5 from Glitter Elixirs Cosmetics. I was thinking about this price difference while I was looking, but I thought maybe this was some type of magical glitter so I picked up one just to test.

It wasn’t magical glitter! HA! My advice, Glitter Elixirs Cosmetics is still my favorite glitter for the price and quality. Just stick with them!

The two liquid lipsticks I purchased were suggestions from one of the makeup artists at the booth and they are gorgeous!  I got ‘Bam!’ and ‘Hot Girl’. These are metallic shades like the old Kat Von D colors (she is bringing them back this winter). In fact, Kat Von D ‘Adora’ is a near match to ‘Hot Girl’ from Magnolia. I’ve got a side-by-side comparison below if you are interested. ‘Adora’ is now discontinued, but I found mine at TJMaxx a few months ago so they might still be floating around there.

The lipsticks were $15 each which puts them in the price range of Dose of Colors and Jeffree Star so I will compare them to these mid-level indie brands. The formula was definitely more liquid than cream. I like liquid formulas because they tend to dry down faster and stay longer. The Magnolia formula was no different. I was pleased with the staying power, but don’t expect it to be completely touchproof. There was a little transfer when something touches your lips.

Overall, I’m happy I got a chance to check out Magnolia Makeup this weekend and I know I am going to have SO much fun with these pigments! The glitter was a skip, but now you know! And definitely check out the metallic liquid lipsticks if you are having Kat Von D withdrawal.

Review: Pati Dubroff Spotlight Palette

I’ve had this palette for nearly three months and for some odd reason I haven’t gotten around to reviewing it for you guys! But that hasn’t stopped me from getting my grubby little paws all up in it! I’m here to give you the breakdown on how this eyeshadow palette from Pati Dubroff has been treating my little eyelids for the past few months! I’ll give you a hint – it’s one of my best buys for 2015 (so far)! I’ll tell you why if you keep reading!

This is definitely the most slept on palette I’ve ever reviewed! I stumbled upon this find on eBay back in May when I was looking for an affordable palette I could take with me on my cruise vacation. It was maybe $10 plus a few dollars in shipping.  I wanted something inexpensive that I wouldn’t cry over if it got messed up in transit. Out of all the palettes in my price range on eBay, this one offered a great diversity of color options that I could use during the day while sightseeing and at night (especially for those formal dinners that cruise lines are so fond of offering).

I typically try to read a few reviews on products before I purchase them, but I could only find a handful of reviews period on this item. Most of the reviews mentioned the same pros/cons so I didn’t have much to go on before I hit “Buy It Now”. I purchased this nearly blind because it was so cheap that I thought, “Hey, what the heck!”. If I lost $10 on a shadow palette, the world wouldn’t end. But if I lost/messed up one of my limited edition or expensive palettes on vacation, I *might* have had a panic attack.

Pati Dubroff, the creator of this Spotlight Palette, is a celebrity makeup artist. And I mean, like, real celebrities! She’s done Charlize Theron and Julianne Moore for the red carpet; Kirsten Dunst and Jessica Alba for the covers of major magazines; Kerry Washington and Eva Mendes for some sick editorial shoots – I mean this woman does it all! After doing a bit of research on this incredible artist while waiting for my package to arrive, I felt a little more comfortable with my purchase and began to eagerly await its arrival.

When it came, I could hardly contain myself and had to swatch it before I even managed to turn my camera on. The shades feel like you have just rubbed your finger across a piece of velvet. I was sold in .2 seconds.

This was the only palette of eyeshadows I took with my on my 8-night vacation so it got some pretty good wear on the trip. I’ve also been using it sporadically since I got back, but I have dipped my brush in all the colors at least once so I can attest the performance of each shadow and not just the palette in general. The palette also comes with a felt-tipped eyeliner, but I found it hard to work with so I don’t use that. But you will see it in the pictures below.

I wouldn’t say the palette is broken up into quads, but I am going to review it by 4’s so it’s easier for you guys to digest! Let’s start with the quad on the far left!

Cashmere was definitely not my favorite on my skin tone. The shade is pretty, the pigmentation is there, but it is lost on my skin. It’s too chalky and really just leaves me looking ashy! However, I think this would be a flattering color on fairer skin to set concealer on or around the eyelid.

Oleander is like the shimmery cousin to Cashmere. Again, not a great lid color for me, but when it hits that inner corner as a highlight, magic happens!

Prosecco is a sheer, shimmery champagne color. I tried it as a highlight one night and it was a tad too light, but keep that in mind if you have fairer skin than me.

Amberglow is one of my favorite colors in the palette! It is a rich, true gold shade and boy is it pigmented. As you can tell by the dent in the pan, I use this shade quite often. Most of the time, I use this as my lid color, but I have also used just a little of it as an inner corner highlight. It pairs beautifully with the green shade ‘Boa’ which I will talk about in the next quad.

Goldenleaf is the most BEAUTIFUL mossy green color! It reminds me of Looxi Beauty Urbane, but in a palette. They have similar consistencies so I can’t say I favor one over the other. This shade makes for the most incredible smokey green eye! I used this with the colors ‘Boa’ and ‘Licorice’ one formal night on my cruise and I was blown away by how it reflected in the dim lights of the dining room.

Mystic, unfortunately, was a miss for me. It looks like a brown in the pan, but comes off with a grey undertone on my skin. Matte grey eyeshadow doesn’t really flow with my brown skin. The pigmentation is also a little chalky on this one too! As you can see from the picture, it has barely been touched.

Boa is like heaven to the touch. I mean angles must have created it! I included this in my favorite eyeshadows for fall so you know it is a must have! I probably would have paid about $10 just for this shadow alone. Pop this over a black eyeshadow base and you have got an easy eye look perfect for this time of year!

Phantom is a silver metallic that I like, but it isn’t super special to me! It reminds me of ‘Saints & Sinners’ by Looxi Beauty, but I wear that one more.

Cognac is a killer transition shade for brown skin! It is a matte reddish brown with amazing pigmentation and buildable coverage so you can make that transition as invisible or as bold as you want. Sometimes I pull out this palette just to use this color if I just want to do an easy eye look for the day.

Onyx is so lacking in pigmentation it physically hurts me to swatch it! Literally – it has huge chunks of glitter that catch when you run your finger through it! Unfortunately, it’s a dud.

Acai is a purple shimmer shade and it has all the qualities I was hoping for from ‘Heirloom’ from the Anastasia Beverly Hills Shadow Couture Palette. It is a pretty straightforward shade; it doesn’t have any shifts or any hidden chunks of giant glitter in the pan. The magic happens in the way you apply it. I’ve used a brush dampened with MAC Fix+ to make the color more vibrant. I’ve used a black eyeshadow base to darken the color. I’ve used it over a purple eyeshadow base. Basically, I’ve used this every way I could think of and it looks great all the time!

Licorice looked so promising, but unfortunately it lacks the pigmentation of some of my favorite black eyeshadows. It works in a pinch (like when you are on vacation with no other options and you desperately want to do a smokey eye).

If you are still reading after that super lengthy one-on-one review, yay! I’ll get right to my overall thoughts. Do you need this palette? Yes, you needed it yesterday.

For the quality of the palette, I would have paid at least double what I actually paid for it. It had far more superior shadows than duds and after realizing what a disappointment the Anastasia Beverly Hills Shadow Couture Palette ($30) was, I am even more impressed with this one. This palette is also perfect for fall, so if you don’t want to go through the hassle of buying my top 8 fall shadows separately, this is a superb alternative. You can scour the web for a deal (definitely look for this on eBay) or you can purchase it from Amazon for $20. Pati Dubroff Cosmetics are sold at Costco and I have even seen other bloggers say they found their palette at TJMaxx for around $15.

Get The Look: Top 8 Fall Eyeshadows

The end of summer is near! August is right around the corner and that means it’s time to start thinking about switching up your makeup routine for the new season. Goodbye hot pink lipstick, hello berry lips! To help jump start the transition, I’ve listed my top 8 eyeshadows to pair with your new fall look. Keep reading below to see my favs!

To me, nothing says fall quite like pumpkins. The idea of pumpkin farms, Halloween pumpkin carving, pumpkin pie, and Pumpkin Spice Lattes from Starbucks make my little heart flutter! My first eyeshadow pick for fall screams ‘PUMPKIN’! This shade has some shimmer in it so it would be great as a lid or inner corner color. Coastal Scents, $1.95
This matte navy blue shade will up your smokey eye game to a 1000! Instead of black, which can still be a bit harsh for balmy autumn nights, try a dark blue lid color instead. You can always add a bit of black on the outer colors to further deepen the color. Or try a black eyeshadow base to make the color pop. My personal favorite is also from NYX.
NYX Cosmetics, $4.50

Make them green with envy when you walk by in this shimmery moss green shadow! This color is from one of my favorite eyeshadow palettes from celebrity makeup artist Pati Dubroff. This shade is especially gorgeous on hazel or dark brown eyes. Pair this with a bit of gold shadow in your inner corner and you are set for the night! Amazon, $19.75
Of course I was going to add a copper shadow to this list, DUH! I absolutely love this one by MAC which I got a few months ago. Not only is the formula super smooth, but it is buildable. You can apply a little bit of product for a subtle glow on your lid, or you can pack it on for an intense bright copper finish. MAC Cosmetics, $16

If you are looking for the most bang for your buck, look no further than Looxi Beauty ‘Urbane’! The pigmentation of this shadow is out of this world amazing. It is a dusty gold with a bit of a green undertone. You don’t have to use much to make a statement. This shade is especially beautiful in dim light so pull it out for date night! Looxi Beauty, $5
My love for mineral pigments knows no bounds! Pure pigments like ‘Tempura’ from Ultimo Cosmetics offer the most intense color payoff out of all the shades on this list. I’ve worn this shade over a black eyeshadow base to a concert and it didn’t budge during a night filled with dancing and singing along at the top of my lungs. ‘Tempura’ can hang, honey! Jenny’s Mineral Shack, $4.88

If you aren’t as comfortable with colorful eyeshadow as I am, you will look beautiful (and still be in your comfort zone) with this peachy, golden shimmer from ColourPop Cosmetics and YouTube beauty vlogger KathleenLights. You really can’t go wrong with a shade like this during any time of the year, but there is something about gold in fall that makes it feel more appropriate. This shadow is sold in a set of four colors developed by KathleenLights for ColourPop. ColourPop, $20
There is no way this list would be complete without a smokey matte black! I’ve picked one of my go-to black shades that will add another layer of sultriness to any of the other shadows on this list. Of course you can hit the town with a traditional smokey eye, but you can also add a tiny bit of this to the outer corner of your eye look to take it from day to night. This black has medium pigmentation so you can build up the darkness of your lid to your comfort level. Milani Cosmetics, $3.99

First Impression: Dior Addict Fluid Shadow

When I saw the first swatches of the new Dior Addict Fluid Shadows, I truly understood what makeup envy meant! I’m not one to go for ultra-prestige makeup brands, but these liquid eyeshadows were calling from behind the Dior counter. So I quickly set a course for my nearest Nordstrom to go test them for myself. Keep reading below for my my initial thoughts!

Quick poll: How often do you purchase a $32 eyeshadow?

Never, you say? I’m totally with you on that one!

I have NEVER purchased a shadow more than $25 (NARS ‘Outer Limits’) and I cringe at the thought of that number creeping closer and closer to $30. Shelling out OVER $30 is basically unheard of in this Beauty Depot!

But I felt that the exception had to be be made to test out this new Dior formula. After all, it isn’t everyday you see a liquid eyeshadow!

My first thought post application was “These dry really fast!”

Like ” Lime Crime liquid lipstick” fast. Almost too fast for an eyeshadow if you were planning on blending it out. They do blend out after they dry, but it might be a good idea to apply a small amount at a time and blend it out before it fully dries to avoid demarcation lines.

The applicator is more like a tiny lip gloss wand so I would suggest using it to dab some on your finger and then taking your finger to apply it to your eye lid. That way you can cover more area with a dab instead of trying to slide it all over your eye with the small applicator.

The first layer went on semi sheer, but the second layer (after the first one dried) was nearly opaque. Magnetic was the only color I had problems with. Even with a second layer, the application was streaky and you could see patches of my natural skin color coming through.

I ended up purchasing the color Cosmic because it was too beautiful to pass up. But after I paid, walked back to my car, and drove home, I began to feel a tad bit of buyer’s remorse. There were so many other things I could think of that I could have spent that $32 on!

When I got home to my makeup collection, I grabbed some purples that I thought might pass for the Dior shadow. I was surprised to find that none really compared to the metallic vibrancy that I paid so dearly for. The closest I could get to replicating the color was to put Looxi Beauty Saints & Sinners ($5) on top of my Estee Lauder Pure Color Base in Neon Fuchsia ($14 at the CCO), but even then, it was just shimmery, not metallic. However, if you are OK with just something similar, this was the closest I could find and the price for the two products combined is just over half of what I paid at Dior. I threw in a swatch of MAC Cosmetics Trax shadow as well because it looked similar to Saints & Sinners in the pan, but it is clearly different on the skin.

But if you want that vibrant metallic color, you had better head on over to that Dior website and say a prayer for your wallet because it is truly one of a kind!

Review: Looxi Beauty Shimmer Eyeshadows ‘Pistol Whipped’, Savant’, ‘Saints & Sinners’, ‘Urbane’

A brand spankin’ new makeup brand hopped on my radar recently and I’m so excited to tell you about it! I found Looxi Beauty on Instagram and was immediately drawn to the shimmer eyeshadows. I purchased a few to test out and share my findings with you all. Ready to know what I thought of them? Read more below!

I often come across a variety of makeup brands on Instagram. After a while, they all seem to run together, but every once and a while, I see a company that could really be on to something. These companies really get me excited about makeup and beauty in general because they offer some really cool products that break up the monotony of offerings from major beauty brands.

Looxi Beauty caught my eye with their shimmer eyeshadows.

And these aren’t just any shimmer shadows, some of them are duochrome. And I loooooove my duochromes!

I’ve been searching for more single duochrome shadows since Kat Von D pulled her Shape Shifter shadows from Sephora stores. I have a couple of palettes with one or two duochromes each along with several MAC pigments, but those are so expensive. I need my ‘drugstore price’ fix sometimes! After diving head first into the land of ColourPop Cosmetics ($5, have you tried Kindness!? Gawdddddd it’s beautiful!) and Ultimo Cosmetics ($1, you guys should know how I feel about these beautifies if you are a consistent reader of my blog), I have been more accepting of duochrome colors and colorful shadows in general.

So I’m here today to show you four gorgeous shadows from Looxi that will make your day! The shadows come in standard-size  single, magnetized pans so you will need a Z Palette or something similar to store these.

I surprised myself at how much I was drawn to Pistol Whipped. I don’t own any shadows in the silver family so this purchase was really outta left field for me! But it looked so pretty in the product shots that it somehow found its way into my cart at checkout.

As much as I loved this color, it had some problems staying put on my lid. I used a black base when I applied it the first time and a regular eyeshadow primer the second time I wore it, and both times the color faded in the middle of my lids and my natural oils peeked out. The color stayed fine on the inner and outer corners so I’m not sure if its just not compatible with my lids or what. The second time I used it, I really packed on the color to try and work around the problem, but it still happened. If you have oily lids, you might want to stay away from this one.

Finally, I just want to point out a quick comparison I saw when I opened Urbane. I received Urbane as part of a ‘Buy Three, Get One’ promotion so it wasn’t one I originally picked out to purchase. I don’t think I would have gone for it on my own, but who knows, I may have gotten around to it.

Urbane is a gold with an olive shift. It’s more of a metallic shadow than a shimmer and the pigmentation is insane! When I received the Anastasia Beverly Hills Shadow Couture palette, the color ‘Metallic’ looked similar, but it actually swatched a lot lighter and of course without the shift making Urbane color truly unique in my collection.

If you are looking for some quality shadows to switch up your everyday neutral game on a budget, I would tell you to look up some options at Looxi. For $5, you really can’t beat the price for the quality. Their crazy color selection might be intimidating to some makeup lovers, but you can always use as little or as much as you want. You can experiment all you want for $5!

Review: Anastasia Beverly Hills Fall 2015 Eyeshadow Palette – ‘Shadow Couture’

I present to you the Anastasia Beverly Hills Shadow Couture World Traveler Palette! I have been patiently waiting for this product to come out and I am SOOO glad I finally have it in hand so I can give you all the scoop! I haven’t been purchasing much makeup this July, but this was maybe one of five products on my list to get in the midst of a flurry of beauty releases this month. Was I impressed? Keep reading to find out!

I wanted to play around a do a look with this palette before I gave my full review just to make sure my first impressions were accurate. Sometimes just swatching some shadows doesn’t give me all the necessary info to share an informed review. However, this time, my first impressions stayed consistent throughout use and there won’t be too many surprises in this review.

Up first, my favorites – Morocco & Soft Peach. Really the entire left side of the palette is like a neutral-lovin’ gals heaven! You have a quad of shadows that includes Soft Peach, Morocco, Fudge, and Spoiled. All but Spoiled are matte and make for the best on-the-go neutral, smoky eye I have ever done. Morocco is a very warm reddish-brown (definitely more brown, less red) but it has just enough color in it to actually show up on my skin instead of blending in with my naturally complexion.

Morocco and Soft Peach stood out for me because, combined, they offered me the perfect transition shade. Soft Peach by itself was a bomb brow highlight and Morocco on its own gave my crease just enough depth for daytime wear. Fudge and Spoiled compliment this duo by offering a shade to further deepen the crease to take the look from day to night (Fudge) and a beautiful lid color that will shimmer beautifully under sunlight and glimmer under lights at night (Spoiled). Can you see why that left side is my fav!? I would have paid $30 just for those four colors. The final neutral color in the palette, a true matte black called Noir, is on the far right side and if anyone has the Tamana ‘DressYourFace’ palette, you know this shade is killer! I’ve already used up most of the shade in the Tamana palette so it’s good I now have a backup.

The other seven shades in the palette were satisfactory, not outstanding, but still worth talking about. I was most dissapointed in Heirloom (purple shimmer) and Chic (I don’t even know how to describe this). Heirloom did not show up purple on my lid! I tried it with primer and concealer and a combination of both as a base and the shade got so muddied I just had to wipe it off and start over. Chic is a weird color to me. It is very cool toned and looks almost pewter in the pan, but if you look at it from a different angle you can see some green undertones in it. It did not compliment my skin at all.

Pink Champagne is a beautiful color, but it has some rather large chunks of shimmer/sparkles in it that makes it hard to work with. I tried putting it in my inner corner, but instead of a consistent pink shimmer, my corners reflected as if I had just stuck some silver glitter right there and called it a day! Bellini, Azure, Intense Gaze, and Metallic are true shimmers and they are so velvety smooth it is insane! But with that smoothness comes the fallout of all fallout. I used Intense Gaze on my lid and my eyelashes and cheeks ended up being covered in it too! This was even after I tapped by brush after picking up the product, but before applying to my lid. Metallic is the same way. Bellini is a shade I feel could be easily replicated and you probably already have it in you collection. Look for an alternative before you reach for this one because the pigmentation of the one you already have might be better. I had such high hopes for Azure and it let me down! I wanted an intense royal blue, but it showed up nearly navy against my skin even with a base. I used it on my lower lash line and while I’m happy with the color, it wasn’t what I was expecting or hoping for.

I’ll post some pictures of my swatches as well as the initial look I did with the palette so you can see it in action. Questions? Hit me in the comments! Happy shopping!

HAUL! Coastal Scents Eyeshadow Hot Pots

A few weeks ago, Coastal Scents was having a great sale and I went a little crazy! All of their eye shadow hot pots were only $0.99 each and I couldn’t resist. I nearly walked away with one in every color, but I restrained myself and only purchased some warm shimmery shades perfect for summer. Want to know which ones I grabbed? Read on!

I was so stoked when I saw on Instagram that Coastal Scents had restocked all their shadows and they were having a sale to boot! The company often has some pretty awesome deals, but most of the time nearly all their eye shadows are always sold out. So this was a huge win for me and I immediately went to order #alldashadows.

I ended up *only* getting 16 shadows and in total, I spent $20 including shipping. This is a great deal on shadows! To compare, I could get 2 MAC shadows, and 3 Makeup Geek shadows for this same price. I’d say 16 beats 2-3, what about you?

I know what you are thinking: “But how do these compare quality wise?”

I’d say these were pretty good! Not stellar, but totally worth $1. My budget shadow go-to’s are typically from Morphe Brushes. Their single shadows are only $2, but their shipping is a flat rate of $8 anywhere in the US and that’s what normally kills the sale for me. I rarely order from their website. Shipping for Coastal Scents was around $4 to Georgia, but it varies depending on your location.

I wouldn’t say these were even Morphe quality, but I maybe something similar to Wet ‘N Wild. You definitely need a primer and there will be some fallout. But the color are gorgeous and (as I will keep repeating) you can’t beat the price tag! The shadow pans are also the same size as a MAC or a Makeup Geek shadow.

On this go round, I purchased all shimmery, warm colors. I’ll probably grab some deeper mattes in the fall, but these will do for now. I was able to swatch the colors without primer on my arm and they did fine. However, when I went to put the colors on my eyelid, I needed the primer. The colors didn’t have the same vibrancy on the darker skin color of my eyelid that they had on the smooth area of skin I swatched on my arm. I use the HD primer from NYX for nearly all my eye looks so this wasn’t a turn off for me.

Review: ColourPop Cosmetics x CoffeeBreakWithDani ‘Metamorphosis’ Eye Quad

As a self-proclaimed ColourPop fanatic, of course I was going to buy this quad from one of my fav vloggers! You guys should know me well enough by now to know that I purchased this the second it released. This quad contained one matte finish eyeshadow, one satin, and two with a  sheer opal finish, a new finish for ColourPop, that is similar to a duochrome finish from MAC or Kat Von D. What did I think? Keep reading!

I’m so glad we have established that this purchase was a no-brainer! I hope you guys felt the same way! If you haven’t seen any of Dani’s YouTube videos, you should definitely check out her channel. Dani is one of the most interesting vloggers that I watch because she isn’t a pro makeup artist and instead, chooses to review products for you in an awesome way! Her style is very “if I knew you in real life, we would be besties4lyfe” kind of way. She’s very personable and has definitely gained my trust from her honest first impressions and detailed reviews.

While Dani has collaborated with ColourPop before on a lippie stix and pencil, this is her first eye shadow collab with the brand. The quad has a much deeper meaning than most of the collabs released by bloggers today. The name of the quad (‘Metamorphosis’) and the names of the individual shadows (‘Kindness’, ‘Hope’, ‘Strength’, ‘Bravery’) aren’t typical of eyeshadows currently on the market. Most of the time I expect a name like ‘Super Orgasm’ from NARS or ‘Sin’ or ‘Virgin’ from Urban Decay .. something a little raunchier than ‘Kindness’.

But the names made me curious about the naming process and production process in general, which led me to Dani’s explanation that she hoped these shadows would encourage consumers to ‘be the change’ they wanted to see in the world. To use the names of the shadow to spur a similar action from the user. Dani wants us to be strong in the face of adversity, be brave when venturing into the unknown, be kind to yourself and others, and hope that everyone else would do the same. Now if you watch Dani’s channel, this detailed though process shouldn’t come as a surprise. If you haven’t seen any of Dani’s videos, this is classic Coffee Break lingo.

Now on to the review of the individual shadows! I was most excited to try out the new sheer opal finish shadows. The swatches provided by ColourPop on their website made these colors out to be duochromes similar to the finish you would get from a MAC ‘Blue Brown’ pigment or a Kat Von D ‘On The Road’ Shape Shifting eye shadow. When I popped these open and finally stuck my finger in for a swatch, I could immediately tell that the product wasn’t as gelled together as the original formula satin finish shadows. The product immediately started flaking as soon as I swatched my finger across my arm. You can see in the picture how the swatch of ‘Kindness’ isn’t as clean as the swatch of Bravery or Strength. ‘Hope’ did a bit better, but the product was still much harder to control than the matte or satin finish colors.

Since sheer opal is a new finish for ColourPop, I don’t have any other shadows in this finish to compare to the one’s in the Metamorphosis quad. This might be just a batch problem or ColourPop could still be working out the kinks in the formula. I remember when they introduced the matte formula, some of the matte shades were quite a bit drier than the satin finish shades, but ColourPop has since made changes to the formula and now they are of the same quality. I’m hoping that they will continue to work on their sheer opal formula before they release any more colors.

Once I had these colors swatched, a few possible dupes came to mind and I went ahead and photographed them. I found out that I don’t have anything similar to ‘Kindness’ even though I own several red/green duochromes. ‘Castor Gray’ is from the Sephora + Pantone Universe Facets of Marsala Limited Edition Palette (read my review). ‘Pay Dirt’ is from Ultimo Cosmetics (read my review). ‘Blue Brown’ is from MAC Cosmetics.

Surprisingly, I found that I had a dupe for ‘Hope’ and it was another ColourPop goodie! The Super Shock Cheek Peralized shade ‘Monster’ would be identical to ‘Hope’ with just a few more layers. Two layers of each shade seen in my swatch above.

‘Bravery’ and ‘Strength’ were exactly what I expected from ColourPop. Both are reliable transition and highlighting shades that can be worn a variety of ways. I expect to get quite a bit of use out of ‘Bravery’ this summer because it is the perfect transition shade for my dark skin. I’m a big fan of ‘Mittens’ in the winter, and this is a tad bit lighter – perfect for the current weather here in Atlanta.

If you guys have any more questions about the colors or the quad in general, let me know in the comments below and I will get back to you!
